New Dog has an actual name, and that name is Sooty.
As Jane and I are both terrible lefty Guardian readers with a mortal fear that we might be called racists whilst tramping around the woods shouting out the word "Sooty!" at random, we think it might be kinder to give him a new name.
Some names have already come to mind, such as "Klaxon", which came from this here tweet; and "Fiver", short for the worst thing that we could possibly shout out in public with a dog, for eg "Fiver To See My Bumhole".
Also, "Sonny" and "Scooter" and "Titch", which are all too sensible.

Pedodog?
Call him Sooty, that's the name he knows. A pox on all the narrow minded bigots who find it objectionable. He looks to be a lovely dog with a bit of attitude. Remember Dog is only God spelled backwards for all the pseudo religious nuts.
Bumhole. Definitely Bumhole...
We voted. Looking forward to finding out what he will be called. Have a marvelous Monday.
Best wishes Molly
Sooty? Assuming he has familiarity with the show and your desire to shout something inappropriate in public, how about "Matthew Corbets's hand up my ar$e?". If shouting that at night at him in the garden doesn't get you more free sky meat, nothing will.
If he does what you tell him - Clegg.
If he sleeps a lot - U Kip.
Please name him Crimer so I can think of you standing in the park shouting "Crimerrrrrrrrrrrrrrr"
I have had many foster dogs, the Vespers, Mixies, Oogie, Biddy, Chocko, Ripper, Biscuit, Jasmine, Brownie, Max, Sasha, Gabe, Jellybean, Pepper, Dicey...and have permanent ownership of The Bestest Dog In The Whole Wide World, Bisto, may he RIP.
Whatever you call him will 'fit' after a few weeks.
And congratulations to you both.
Fenton's a popular name, is it not?
How about Snooty? Not too far off from Sooty, although instead of thinking you're racist, people will now think you're judgmental.
How about "Dogger."
Should be fun calling that out whilst tramping around the woods.
Deefor - as is "D for dog"
I asked some of my disciples and they have come up with the following suggestions:
1. Barry
2. Dog (Matthew said it was from Columbo)
3. Hercules
4. Ulysees
5. Gordon
6. Kim Dog Un
I happen to like "Kim Dog Un" but then Klaxon sounds good too.
There's always the very bad taste "Syndrome"... As in down.
Anon 11.34 - I used to know someone who had a horse called "Deefor" when I asked her why she said her friends had a dog called that and she liked the name......
Sooty is a name for a cat not a dog.
Poor chap. Congrats on your new pet. He looks very healthy, smart and good fun. I Sid or Skip.
I've just searched for some male dog names beginning with "S":
Pet Name: Sam
Dog Name Meaning: Its origin is Hebrew and it means to hear
Pet Name: scooter
Dog Name Meaning: always on the go
Pet Name: Sid
Dog Name Meaning: very cool
Pet Name: skip
Dog Name Meaning: dog named after the kings dog skip.

P.S. Part of the word I had to type in here to prove I'm not a robot is: Jack. Made me think of the Stones' Jumping Jack Flash.
Got to be 'Thatcher' in honour off...
Margaret Thatcher
Kim Dog Un is a great name, but my vote would be for 'Gaydar', if only for the stories of you being propositioned in the park as a result of your dog's name.
Also - what a cool looking hound. Noble and yet adventurous.
Maggie Maggie Maggie...
Pusscat, just to confuse everyone; or Scarypooch which would be EXCELLANT...
"Man Star"
Scrappy Doo. You know it makes sense.
Indie, as in ND, for New Dog.
Congrats on the new arrival.
Want the park all to yourself? Call him "Ray Bease"!
Bum face

DOG UPDATE: We like Sid.
Baxter
Dear Alistair, Jane and Sooty,
Sorry, my previous comment omitted the word "like". I meant to say: I like Sid or Skip.
Glad to see your previous dog update says you like the name Sid. My preference would be Sid.
My late parents adopted a dog, similar to your fun looking new dog, and named him Sid. Sid really suited his name.
Here's hoping you name your new dog Sid because it's very cool. xx
P.S. Think of his file at the vets being titled "Sid Coleman". He might get faster service than "Skip Coleman". "Klaxon Coleman" could scar him for life if he's perceived by strangers to be a loud barker.
how about Kenneth.
sorry I've not been around for the last 3 years - long story.
Adolf? Thatcher?
Mr. Slashyface?
Mr. Furrypants?
el Doggo Large-O?
Scarydog?
or of course
Stormageddon Dark Lord of All.
I am not mad. Hey how about "Not mad?"
Godwen
New Dog backwards and sounds a bit medieavally
Capture--->Normsas which I DO have
